Design Inspiration Monday: Beach House Edition

Happy Monday all! I am actually currently hanging out with some of my best girlfriends out in San Diego! Gotta love having the random work schedule that allows for Sun-Tue getaways:) Thought I would show some beach house inspiration to fit the mood..

I love the modern look of this home. I could totally see myself getting cozy in one of those rad chairs and getting lost in my view.

Kitchen Makeover: Part 482, THE END

Once upon a time there was a yellow house that longed to have an open-airy country
kitchen, but at the same time have the makings of a chic city loft. It started as a galley
kitchen, with the counters being the same tile as the floor {very chic, right?!}. It also
had a horribly stained white sink, an all too small pantry area, and only one oven. This kitchen was screaming for a makeover, and luckily one day, we were blessed to be able to do just that- MAKE IT OVER!

It all started with this:

We then did a whole lot of paint work, smoothing of walls, and adding trim to make it look like this:

And then we had a vision to make it this {minus the: yellow, ugly table, missing brick, and cabinets on the wrong side of the island}, with the help of Lowes room planner

So without further ado, here is the beauty all {well, almost all} finished:

Looks quite a bit like the vision, huh? We are beyond thrilled with how everything turned out. It has been quite the journey, with everything from:
The biggest change we made was knocking down a wall and moving the laundry room to the other side of the 'now' brick wall. The character of the brick wall, off-set by the elegance of the chandelier, is what your eyes are drawn to instantly when you walk in the house. BAM!

Looking straight ahead here, this was the area of our old laundry room. It now is a
great place where large groups of friends and family can hang out freely, relax, and enjoy some good food. It also is the area we chose to hang our DIY driftwood art we made. I love sitting on the bench {keep in mind- we got this baby for $20 from a garage sale} and drinking my coffee in the mornings, it has a certain coffee shop feel, yet my coffee costs me $.10 instead of $4 {no offense coffee shop owners/frequenters}.

We finally got to put one of my our dreams into action by creating an island for the kitchen. I love the open flow it allows throughout, and the fact that even with six people in there at the same time, it still feels open {which was so not the case with the previous galley kitchen}. Also, it allows me to have tons of counter space on the sides and in front of the stove, which is great for all my prep work. One added benefit that J and I didn't really even think we would love so much, is the ability to eat at the island. It is incredibly convenient now, and will only continue to get more once we add to the group { you know, kids, not more dogs..!}

As for the granite countertops, we ended up going with the much cheaper budget-friendly option of Bianca, and couldn't be more pleased. Read about our process of the counters here, and even more on that to come.

My 'baby' of the kitchen is the beloved farmhouse sink we got from Home Depot. It has been a dream to work with, making washing dishes actually {almost} enjoyable. To make the sink even more dreamy we added this awesome faucet, also from Home Depot. The backsplash we chose was the classic white subway tile. We used the classic white grout from Home Depot for the grout. Super easy on the eyes, and the hands for cleaning:)

I spend many-a hours here slaving away with dishes..but I love it

Next you move into the brand new pantry area. This is how it looked prior to the makeover:

Here is the new and improved view:

In the pantry we added an oven and microwave wall unit, additional cabinets, along with an additional counter space that we will eventually add open shelving above {showing now because I knew you guys were tired of me being such a tease}. There will be much more about the pantry in later posts. For now, were asking for some serious advice.

Before:

We hate the boobie lights. Hate them. If you don't know what a boobie light looks like, see the arrow above, or ask your mom and dad {I kid, I kid}. But seriously, we hate it, and still have the same dilemma in the new pantry area. Ideas, suggestions, haters of boobie lights? Theres not enough room for can lights, and we i'm not allowed can't have any more chandeliers.

On the opposite wall of the cabinets is the new laundry room.

One of the only things we were sad to see go was the french doors. We simply couldn't keep them if we wanted the laundry room to be relocated, and the pantry to be functional. Bummer, huh?! But we still have a single door that lets plenty of light in.

We were super excited to be able to carry the hardwood throughout the whole kitchen and pantry now, which leaves only the bathrooms and the laundry room woodless. Hopefully we will have a full wood floor installing tutorial coming soon {done by our amazing floor guy Steve}, and if not, at least a basic tutorial with photos {done by yours truly<3}. Its humorous to think that this whole makeover stemmed from our hardwood floors being discontinued, which got us in a panic thinking "CRAP, what if we ever want to do a kitchen makeover and they are out of the same wood..what then?" Dun dun dun...

We are loving all the little details we have already added, and obviously there are many more to come. For instance, we still direly need a rug for under the sink, and under the miners cart {from Modern Manor-duh!}. We will be continually adding things as we go, and will keep you posted.

Thanks so much for following along throughout the process! We truly couldn't have done it {at least with a smile} without y'all and your positive and encouraging feedback. I'll leave you know with a shot from our dining room {with the ever so loved card catalog} into the kitchen. Be sure to let us know what you think, good and bad, mostly good though, , i'm a sensitive one folks!

How To Install Cabinet Hardware......And How Not To Install Cabinet Hardware

We just finished putting on all the hardware last night because we have been waiting on an order of the pulls. Yay for getting final touches finished!Here is a step-by-step tutorial of how to install hardware, enjoy!

Supplies:
Drill
1/4" Drill Bit
3/8" Drill Bit
Phillips head or Flat head screw driver
Painters Tape
Pen
Mounting Jig for pulls and Jig for knobs {available at Home Depot for around $5 each}
Knobs
Pulls {We purchased ours at coolknobsandpulls.com}

Pulls:
Steps:
1.  Put some paper inside your drawer to catch the wood chips/left overs from your drill bit.  We also put a piece of tape that acts as a catcher in the drawer.  Just secure the bottom half and fold back the top half.  Apparently this is a pretty common trick, but we learned about it from YoungHouseLove.

2.  Measure the top of the drawer and place a piece a tape in the center and mark the center point.  {MOST IMPORTANT STEP!!! You will see why in a minute :( }

3.  Align the center line of the Jig with the center line you chose.  Select which holes correspond with your style of hardware.  We chose the 3rd row in the second section for our alignment.  Mark your holes with the pen.  Test your pull with the pen marks to ensure they are centered {Can you feel the impending doom}

4.  Using the 1/4" Drill Bit, drill all the way through the drawer at both pen marks.  Be sure to drill level.  You may also want to make sure that your holes are level once drilled.  Also check to make sure the hardware lines up correctly.  You can adjust the holes a bit by re-drilling if needed.

5.  Using the 3/8" Drill Bit drill half way into the drawer.  This will allow for the pull to fit since it has a tapered end.

6.  Once the holes are drilled, clean up the holes and remove the tape catcher.

7.  Place the hardware on the front of the drawer and insert the screws through the inside of the drawer and tighten using the screw driver.

8.  Step back and admire.

Knobs:
These are much easier
Steps:
1.  Select which hole you would like to use from your jig.  Line your jig up against the cabinet door and mark your spot with the pen.  The one we used had a bumper on both sides, so it was very easy to line up.

2.  Drill hole at pen mark through the door using the 1/4" Drill Bit
3.  Insert screw into the hole and tighten knob on to the screw using your screw driver.

4.  Step back and wish the pulls were that easy.

Quick tip:  Take your time on measuring the center.......J was going too quick and made a booboo.  He realized the mistake after he drilled because he skipped lining the pulls up to the pen mark.  He is very good at math but when he was trying to find the center of an 17 3/4" drawer he marked the center at 9 7/8" {and for those of you saying whats the big deal....wells that is an inch too much, the center is at 8 7/8"}.......he was really mad at himself, but I was busy making chocolate chip cookies- so I told him "no biggie, its not the end of the world", when I was really thinking 'If I don't get those cookies finished soon so they can be in my belly-that will be the end of the world'!

So he re-drilled the holes and we puttied the hole that was on the outside.  I actually think its not a big deal but J just wont let it go....oh boys and their ego's! He is going to buy a new cabinet and take the drawer out and replace ours.  HD is still having the 20% off sale on cabinets, and with our 10% off coupon it will be less than $80, so it is not a huge mistake, but a costly one for going too fast.  So don't be like us on this one, TAKE YOUR TIME, especially if you have cabinets that cost more than $80.

Hope this tutorial helps, and guess what...photos will be up TOMORROW of the kitchen! Holy crap!

Bringing It Back

Today my best girlfriend and I brought our pups down to Tempe Town Lake, an awesome spot to walk, run, take your dogs out, whatever. It was gorgeous out today, and I was being a lazy bum on my day off- so Melissa made me get off my butt and go.

The pups-Ava {her friends dog}, Boomer, and Honey. I love the LARGE to small:)

We had a blast letting the pups explore off their leashes, and surprisingly the devious Honey did great staying by us. Ava, well she just drooled a ton...notice the circle, that white clump is her drool..yum
Today I just threw on a top and jeans {because I was still in my PJs at 2:30 when she called..its my only day off-I have rights!!} and didn't realize until I got there that I had a very 70's thing going..
The fantastic tee {in a funny and real way} was my moms that she gave me. The front corner originally said AD {her initials} but being the awesome mom she is, she removed part of the D to make it an L, now its AL for me:) I couldn't agree more with what it says though- I ADORE being married to J. The jeans also brought it back, these are my new Super Flare Sevens. So far- totally loving them, what do you think?

Tomorrow we are having the house cleaned professionally {I have only had this done one other time in almost 3 years of marriage} so to say that I am kinda excited is an understatement!!!! Once its all spiffed up I hope to snap some shots of the kitchen to show y'all. Happy hump day from me and my pups..

Tips On Choosing A Paint Color

Hi friends! I know you might be a little tired of hearing about painting..BUT I found a website that I am now obsessed with for choosing paint colors and thought I would share. DecorPad is my new best friend! It is amazing because you can choose a color and they show tons of pictures of real-life rooms in that color. When you select a photo is also shows exactly what paint color that person used. When you think you found a gray you might like you can then select that color and it pulls up all other rooms painted in that color. See why i'm obsessed? It gives you such a great example of what the colors look like in real-life.

I found two grays I really liked on the site and got samples of them quick! Did you know that Home Depot can get you {almost} any brand or color regardless if its the brand/colors they display? Love it! I got a sample of Benjamin Moore's Stonington Gray {not to be confused with other brands stonington gray, which they accidentally made me two gallons of:/} and Valspar's Bonsai. RULE NUMBER ONE: ALWAYS TRY OUT A SAMPLE BEFORE PAINTING A ROOM. ALWAYS. Wanna see why?
That top swatch of paint is the Bonsai color. The shade on the left is what the paint looked like on the sample, while the paint was still wet. The shade on the right is the color once it fully dried. SO much darker. I am so glad we always get samples because the dried gray was entirely too dark. The middle color is the Stonington. The bottom shade was just a light gray sample we had laying around {can't remember the color..sorry!} Guess what one we went with...

Stonington it is! The gray is perfect. Not too dark, and it feels warm even though its a 'cool' color. We went around and painted the three colors all over the house before finally choosing the right one, even had both of our families over on Friday night with all the swatches painted:) They're used to our house being a work in progress..
Love me some hubby<3
Honey and Boomer definitely helped in the process. Honey helped by overseeing the work from her favorite spot in the house, the same spot that she gets yelled at every time she's on, because she shouldn't be!

Boomer helped by totally eating just chewing on the used up rolls of Frog Tape.
We amazingly got it all finished in a matter of 7 hours. Hooray!! How embarrassing is it that my inner thighs were totally sore the day after from getting on and off a chair to paint. Man- I suck! Anyway, I hope to have some AFTER photos of the kitchen and the new color all throughout by Friday! Can I get a what-what?!?! What?

Adri
